So my teacher always used to say when you feel like you’re drowning in your problems the best thing you can possibly do is to make a mind map! I know, I know, that’s their advice for just about everything. But I promise you this actually helps (and the best part is it involves an optional bonfire)!
So, every single problem you will ever face in life falls into about 3 categories: things you can control and things you can’t control. The third category I’ll explain later on.
So, let’s start with the things you can control:
Step one: take a pen and some paper and start writing out all the problems you can control. These can be absolutely anything; you aren’t happy with your weight, friendship group, the way you are treating others or even the way you treat yourself.
Step two: now one by one go through your collection of resolvable problems and do just that – resolve them! Make a mind map on each sheet with steps you can take to solve these, or at least to help them a bit. Now the idea of this activity isn’t to add more pressure to yourself, any ideas you come up with have to be feasible. For example, if your problem is your weigh the solution wouldn’t be to run a marathon every day. You need to slowly build yourself up and eventually you will achieve your goals.
Step three: now this step is completely optional but it has helped me a lot. If you now get a notebook and write down a list of things you want to achieve, almost like a to-do list. This can be done on a weekly or monthly basis. Now as you achieve each goal tick it off. Keep on going until you have pages and pages full of ticks.
Now we move onto the things you can control:
Step one: grab a pen and as many pieces of paper as you need. Now what I want you to do is to write down one of the problems you can’t control on each piece of paper until you run out of problems. The problems can be as big or as trivial as you like, it’s totally up to you what you consider to be a problem in your life.
Now, here’s the fun part! Step two: completely destroy them! These problems are out of your control and there is absolutely nothing you can do to change them, right? So get rid of them! Scrunch the bits of paper up as tightly as you can, rip them into a million pieces or even throw them into a bonfire if you like.
