Now I can almost guarantee that at most stages in your life you will be stuck with someone who is, as my nan would put it, a negative Nelly! So the question I am asking you all to think about today is this: how do you remain positive around these types of people?

Well, do you want to know what I think? You’re still reading so I shall assume you do. By having compassion, showing sympathy and empathy, and most importantly talking to them. I know you’ve heard it all before but it really is true – you never know what a person could be going through, so be there for them if they need a friend to confide in or even just someone who will listen to what they have to say. If people are good at hiding anything it’s their problems, negativity and bitterness are just another way of masking sadness and fear so whatever you do, don’t add to this.

For the above reasons especially, you should never take it personally when people are negative. I know first hand this can be incredibly hard at times and sometimes it makes you want to give up on them but I promise if you can make them smile even once a day it is so worth persevering. It’s important to remember that every single person is going through or has been through something no one else will understand and that everyone’s journey in life is different. You will not always be able to understand what another person is experiencing but that doesn’t mean you can’t be there for them. Think of this as an opportunity to be more empathetic, to imagine how you would feel if their situation was yours. Even the most positive of people will know you can’t be positive all the time…

But say you talk to them and discover there is absolutely nothing going on, this person is just negative and rude with no reason, what then? You grin and bear it! I personally have found one of the most effective ways of staying positive is simply by smiling, even when you aren’t totally happy with what’s going on. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, there’s no point in stressing over what you can’t control. And let’s be honest, the way you react to people and situations will always say a lot about you. You will learn a lot about who you are as a person when you are faced with negativity so think of it as a learning curve on your road to self-discovery.

So basically what I’m trying to say is…

And if all that fails, just adhere to that age-old saying and kill them with kindness!
